Unemployment is at an all time high and if you hadn't heard of furlough before, you probably have by now. Americans are struggling to pay their bills and support their families. Life as we knew it is out the window, there is no returning back, only moving forward to a new standard of life.
JP was put on furlough this month. We have been so grateful that he was able to find a job before this shut down occured and now we are grateful that we have the stimulus package to help us thru these rough times. If you do not know, Americans are able to receive an extra $600 a week of unemployment. This is on top of your already provided unemployment benefits for up to 4 months. As of now, this stimulus will go thru the end of July. So, if you have lost your job or been put on furlough, claim unemployment and receive this extra money to help you thru these tough times.
You have also probably received your $1,200 check that was sent out. Of course, if you over threshold of $75K of annual salary for a single person or $150K for couples, you will get a lower amount until you reach $99K for singles and $198K for couples and at that point you do not get a check. I have seen in the news where they are talking about doing another round of checks, but who knows if that will happen and when. As someone who is interested in personal finance, I know there are Americans who make over the $198K threshold and are horrible with money.
By the end of this year, there are going to be all new stats up. I think the majority of Americans are likely pinching pennies now. People are starting to wake up to the fact that they need to budget better or even start. No one could have predicted something like this, except for the Simpsons of course. If there is one thing I hope Americans learn is to be better with their finances. Put away a 3-6 month emergency fund, save up for items you know you'll need in the future instead of waiting for it to break and then scrambling to get the money for a new one. I am so happy that I have had so many people reach out to me, it means people are realizing they need to do something different. It is never too late to start and I love helping others with this.
