Date Night In - Crab

Garlic Roasted Crab Legs

Is it me or is eating out costing more and more these days? Sure we have our low priced spots like Pho 555, Nola's and Star Kitchen, but if we want a proper date night, it costs about $100.

One of our biggest budget breakers is our food category and this year we decided to do better. We looked back on our spending and we realized that we didn't need to spend that much, so we lowered our food budget. Do you ever eat out and think that it wasn't worth it? I hate spending money on bad food. We felt like we were eating mediocre food and throwing our money away at it.  One of our goals is to cook expensive meals at home, but at a much lower cost.
Side note: Denver food is not that great, so to my Houston readers... best of luck staying out of those delicious restaurants! Did you know that Texas is the best food state in the nation?

This post is one of our favorite meals to cook at home. Crab. We buy this crab at Costco and at the time of this blog Dungeness crab is $8.99/lb. Throw in some potatoes, garlic sauce and wine and you got yourself a nice meal. I got receipts to prove how much a meal like this will cost you:

2.8lb Dungeness Crab $25.53
4 small red potatoes $.54
Lemon $.59
Total: $26.66
All the other ingredients we already had, so I did not include those.

I decided to look up a popular Denver seafood restaurant, Jax, to see how much this would cost if we ate out.

1b of Dungeness crab is $48, we had 2.8lbs, $134.40
No red potatoes on the menu, fries is $6
Total before tax and tip: $140.40
With tax and 20% tip: $181.54
This does not even include the wine.

Difference between eating this out and eating at home (without alcohol) is $154.88.

Not only is the savings significant, but we also had leftovers. So on the weekend, we made a special crab and mushroom brunch meal.

For this meal we cooked up some hashbrowns, fried an egg and topped with the leftover crab and added some mushrooms. The fancy meals continue!
