What is your why?
What is your "why" to wanting to build wealth? This is the first question you need to answer before you get started. Maybe you have debt and you are sick of paying on your student loans and want to be done with it. Or maybe you want to give more but feel you can't until you get a handle on your finances. Whatever your reason, find out what your why is.
We started in 2015. When my dad died we decided to take over paying for our wedding and ended up cash flowing our wedding and honeymoon. Starting in January of 2016, we decided to tackle the student loans and car. You can read more on that here. Over time our why has changed. First, it was that we were sick and tired of having debt. Once we got out of debt, we were in a fortunate position to buy a home. We put down 25% on our house, furnished the house, gave more and enjoyed some over due vacations. Fast forward to 2020 and the mortgage has weighed on us and we are ready to be free of its chains.
Our why is constantly evolving and in recent months we have reflected more and more on our future. JP wants to retire at 55 and I want the freedom to choose a future that doesn't involve the desperation that debt inflicts.
Your why should be more than just, "I want more money." You need to know why you want more money. I have seen over and over again people who just say they want more, but once they get more, they are never satisfied. Take the time to find your why. Your why should light a fire under you. Your why will motivate you to push harder and reach further. Getting on financial track is like trying to get healthy. I see our mortgage like fat that needs to be trimmed off. There will be days where you eat a bowl of queso for breakfast but that doesn't mean you have to eat like shit the rest of the day. You will have days where you want to spend your money on a new outfit, drinks with some buddies, expensive sushi, whatever... and if you do, that's ok. Just like trying to get healthy, you just get back on track to going after that goal you have, whatever it may be. We are all human and we all make mistakes, it's getting back at it that sets you apart from everyone else.
What is your why? What is going to excite you and make you dream of a future that can become a reality? Be sure to comment and subscribe.
