We are headed to Houston

When you are planning a vacation, do you budget? Or do you go on vacation and pay for it later? Whether you are planning an extravagant trip to France or a quick trip to see family, budgeting is key. But isn't budgeting and planning key to everything?

JP and I are headed to Houston at the end of February. We are going to his cousin's wedding, hanging out with his family, seeing my bff and eating great food. We have found ways to cut costs by using points for our flights and staying with his sister while we are in town, but there are still costs that cannot be avoided. We needed to get a rental car, provide gas for rental car, park our car at the airport and eat delicious food. While we could definitely opt to eat cheap, delicious food like Whataburger and Taco Cabana only, that is not an option for us foodies. We will be enjoying Pappasito's, Asian style crawfish and other great foods we cannot get in Denver. To be honest, food is almost always one of the most expensive items on our travel budgets.

When I was searching for rental car options, I was shocked by how much those prices have gone up. I will usually go with Budget or some other major chain that is available at the airport, but this time was different. Jp's cousin recently visited us and told us about Turo. Turo is a rental car website for people to rent out their personal vehicles. They had used it while here in Denver and loved it. I compared the prices from Turo against the airport rental car companies, and opted for Turo. When looking at the cheapest vehicle at Budget, which would have been a Mitsubishi, it was the same cost of renting a 2019 BMW X3 on Turo and Turo had a 2019 Toyota Camry for half the price. Fingers crossed we have a great experience with Turo!

Above is how we record our budget to actuals. After this trip, I will usually include notes for our next trip to that place. Like, bring cash, eat at x restaurant, budget more for food, etc. Doing so has really helped for when we return to cities, like New Orleans. We go almost annually and every year I discover something new. Since this is a quick weekend trip back to H-town, we don't really have any other items to plan for. But you should thoughtfully plan out what you are doing and how much that may be. When we went to the East Coast, I looked up restaurants to find out how much on average we would spend while there.
