Who cares about $2,700!?

I get the most comments, questions and suggestions thru LinkedIn or Facebook messaging. I also get comments from people that I see regularly. One of those comments is that I am focusing on the wrong thing by worrying about lunch costs.

From the lunches that I bring, we save anywhere from $2,700-2,900 a year. In my opinion, that is a lot. And I know to others, that would be a lot to them too. If you were to actually set this money aside you could go on a great vacation, update items in your home, pay down on your debt, basically put that money towards something that you care more about than lunch out. So when I hear that people think that saving on lunches is insignificant or that I should focus on the bigger picture, all I can think is that those people just don't get it.

Most Americans are in debt and are living paycheck to paycheck. Do you honestly think that those people wouldn't want to save that extra money? Most Americans just don't like to talk about finances and most of them aren't sure where to begin when they decide they should change something about their spending habits. Doing something as simple as bringing your lunch to work can be very significant and can get the ball rolling on getting your finances on track. Once you start to see savings in one area, you are likely to start thinking about the other areas in your life. Do we eat out too much? Do we update our closet too much? Are our vacations costs too high? Do we really need to be driving a BMW? By starting to save on lunches, it will bring awareness to your finances.

Let's just say that you do choose to invest that lunch savings. If we take that yearly savings of $2,700 and break it out monthly, we have $225. If you took that $225 and invest it, you would see that money grow over time. Below is a table if you got an average return of 7%.

Bringing your lunch is more than just small savings. Those small savings add up and can seriously be life changing to someone. Maybe instead seeing your $12.50 lunch out as insignificant, you should look at the bigger picture of bringing your lunch to work and how it could change your life.
